2019 GMC Canyon Review

The 2019 GMC Canyon is similar to Chevy’s Colorado, but with the Canyon, GMC is offering more upscale features, which are optional, as well as a fancier looking grille and nicer wheels. If towing is something that you need, then you’ll be able to do it with this truck. The Canyon’s maximum towing capacity is a powerful 7,700 pounds, so unless you have a yacht or a trailer that’s longer than 24 feet, you should be good to go.

A Variety of Options

The GMC Canyon is a midsize pickup truck that comes in a two- and four-seat extended-cab variation. A five-seat crew-cab body is also available. You can get this truck in two different bed lengths in addition to five different trims. The trim levels are the SL, Base, SLE, SLT and Denali.

The SL is only available with an extended cab. This model does not feature rear seats, and its standard engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque. Other features of the SL include:

• A six-speed manual transmission
• Air conditioning
• 16-inch wheels
• A rearview camera

• A 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system

Entertainment amenities like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a six-speaker sound system also come with the 2019 Canyon.

The Base trim level is the next step up, and you can get this trim with an extended-cab or a crew-cab. This model comes with a six-speed automatic transmission. If you purchase the Base trim, then you can equip your truck with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. You can also purchase a Base Canyon with:

• Remote keyless entry
• An EX-lift and lower tailgate
• Trailer package
• Cruise control

If you upgrade to the SLE Canyon, then your truck will have most of the standard and optional features that are available with the SL and Base trim levels. Your truck will also have:

• 17-inch wheels
• Upgraded interior trim materials
• An 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system
• A high-resolution rearview camera
• Additional USB ports

Optional packages are also available with the SLE. With this trim level, you can purchase a Convenience package that comes with things like automatic climate control, a sliding rear window and remote start. The All-Terrain package consists of amenities like all-terrain tires, a rear locking differential and heated front seats.

The SLT trim level has everything that you can get with the SLE’s Convenience package. If you upgrade to this model, then the bigger engine will come standard. You’ll also get:

• Leather upholstery
• Wireless charging for your smartphone
• 18-inch wheels

GMC is also equipping the SLT with features from the All Terrain package, features like power adjustable and heated seats.

You can equip the SLE or the SLT models with safety features like a forward collision warning system and a lane departure warning system. Additional optional upgrades include a turbocharged 2.8-liter four-cylinder engine that gets 181 horsepower and 369-pound feet of torque. This engine is partnered with a six-speed automatic transmission. You can also equip your Canyon with a seven-speaker Bose audio system.

If you’re the kind of truck buyer who goes all out, then the Denali trim is for you. This model comes with all the amenities, so your truck will have:

• Chrome 20-inch wheels
• The Bose audio system
• Heated and ventilated front seats
• A spray-in bedliner

How Does it Drive?

When tested, the reviewer noted that a Canyon equipped with the 3.6-liter V6 engine has plenty of power. The truck achieved 60 miles per hour in just 6.9 seconds. This truck also offers solid steering and sensitive brakes. During the brake test, the truck came to a stop from 60 miles per hour in 122 feet, which is good for a vehicle of this size and weight. For overall performance, the Canyon is at the top of its class.

What You Should Know About the Inside

Despite it being a truck, the Canyon is a vehicle that comes with plenty of creature comforts inside. It blocks out the road noise effectively and it provides good climate control. You won’t mind taking this truck on long road trips. The seats are comfortable and the interior control interfaces are easy to use. It comes with a convenient infotainment system that responds quickly to your touch inputs. GMC gave the Canyon two USB jacks in the front of the vehicle, and you can even equip the truck with GM’s OnStar system that offers a 4G LTE connection capable of handling seven Wi-Fi devices.
